Irrigation and Water Use Extension Engineer

Position: The is a full-time position in the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) at Michigan State University (MSU) with 30% General Fund (teaching and applied research) and 70% MSU Extension (MSUE) appointments at a Senior Specialist level in the MSU continuing appointment system.

Qualifications: Minimum of a Master?s degree in a related field with at least one degree in agricultural engineering, civil engineering, biosystems or bioresource engineering. Knowledge of water management issues and significant experience in a relevant position is required. A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders is required.

Responsibilities: The position will address issues related to irrigation management and other consumptive water uses with emphasis on production agriculture. It is expected that the specialist in this position will develop a robust Extension program serving stakeholders and policy makers. Interaction with governmental agencies on issues related to water use and withdrawal is expected. Communication with water management specialists and interests in the Great Lakes states will be an expected part of the program. The position requires teaching one to two irrigation related course(s) at a practical level. The person will interact with campus faculty and provide support and training to MSUE field staff located throughout Michigan.

Successful applicants will have experience in one or more of the following areas:
Operational irrigation management
Horticultural irrigation
Irrigation design (including micro-irrigation)
Irrigation economics
Water resources management
Post-harvest agricultural operations including cherry cooling, produce washing in packing houses, and water reuse and recycling technologies
Agricultural waste application through irrigation equipment
