Project Manager - Market Research

The Consumer Insights & Strategy Team at E & J Gallo Winery is undergoing a transition from a project-based department to a strategic leadership partner for the Winery?s Business Units and Commercial Team. The CIS Team is the global Voice of the Consumer within the 3 Business Units ? Premium, Popular, and Value ? both domestically and internationally, and with Channel Marketing and Trade Development teams in the field. CIS Team Members are responsible for developing annual insight plans, executing projects against those plans, and driving consumer learning to influence Commercial decisions with key retailers. Team Members also have responsibility for at least one key strategic initiative for the Winery overall, so that Team Members have a broad understanding of their programs to achieve the Winery?s overall objectives.
As a result of these transformations, there is an opening for a new Project Manager of Consumer Insights & Strategy to create a Shopper Insight capability within the department. This new position will have following key responsibilities:
? defining Shopper Insights for the Sales and Marketing organizations,
? developing the initial Shopper Insight plan,
? presenting Shopper Insights and business implications within the Winery and to key accounts, domestically and internationally
? leading definition and implementation of consumer-based Purchase Decision Hierarchies across all retail channels
? evaluating ROI of commercial spending at all points of shopper and consumer contact This position will manage an annual budget of between $500,000 and $1,000,000, and will not directly manage staff but will influence both internal and external resources to get the job done.
SUMMARY
Provides strategic leadership for business units with strong data-based Consumer Insights into brands and products. Develops and implements insight and research programs that influence marketing decisions. Scope of research issues includes, but not limited to, concept development and validation, packaging design and functionality, advertising development and validation, attitude and usage studies, and brand and advertising awareness tracking.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
? Develops Annual Insight & Research plan for assigned Business Unit team domestically and internationally.
? Designs and executes appropriate consumer research, interprets data and provides cohesive solutions to business and marketing issues leveraging insights from all sources of information, including consumer research, winestyle and product guidance, consumer affairs, sales and marketing analysis.
? Directs and coordinates activities of project personnel to ensure project progresses on schedule and within prescribed budget.
? Integrates existing methods from the Consumer Packaged Goods industry into the Gallo business. Develops new methods to understand consumer behaviors and their interaction with products.
? Participates in department and interdepartmental planning and management teams and works cross-functionally to improve processes within organization.
? Develops recommendations to change systems, policies and procedures as required; ensures timely and accurate implementation.
? Monitors and ensures achievement of goals, objectives, and timelines.
? Acts as liaison with other departments, divisions and organizations.
? Responsible for understanding and complying with applicable quality, environmental and safety regulatory considerations. If accountable for the work of others, responsible for ensuring their understanding and compliance.
? Must maintain satisfactory attendance, to include timeliness.

? 1- 2 staff members as required to meet project timelines.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
? Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in Food Technology, Marketing Research, Experimental Psychology or equivalent from four-year college or university, plus 8 or more years relevant experience preferably in a sensory, marketing research, or product development role in a consumer packaged goods company; MBA/Master's degree preferred; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Skills
? Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
? Computer skill requirements include: Intermediate MS Excel, MS Word and MS PowerPoint; ability to type 35-40 wpm. Ability to use Statistical Analysis Software (SAS, SPSS).
? Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
? Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
? Demonstrated leadership and influencing skills in a multi-functional business environment; ability to influence both peers and superiors, and lead team members to a common solution based on data.
? Ability to think strategically and translate into logical business applications.
? Must possess and apply comprehensive knowledge in area of specialization (sensory, consumer research and product development) to completion of significant assignments.
? Ability to work with all levels and functions within the Company.
? Ability to demonstrate team building, leadership and communication skills.
