Principal Engineer – Protection & Control

The Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia (MEAG Power) is the third largest electric power supplier in Georgia. As a public power corporation, our primary purpose is to generate and transmit reliable, wholesale power to our 49 Georgia communities that includes approximately 600,000 citizens and many businesses. MEAG Power does this through our four co-owned generating plants, 16,000 miles of transmission lines, and the collective efforts of our participant cities.

 Summary: 

 

Under limited supervision, evaluates existing substations and transmission lines that provide load-serving capabilities for the 49 participant cities.  Initiates projects for improvements to existing facilities and construction of new facilities required to accommodate load growth or improve reliability.  Initiates requests to and from other ITS members for modifications required in ITS facilities and coordinates requests for design, engineering, and construction.  Provides MEAG representation on various ITS joint working groups as requested.

 

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities: 

 

1.  Engineers and designs substation projects to include activities such as specifications and drawings for protections and controls, calculation of fault currents and relay settings, field calibration of relays, trip testing protection systems and overall substation design and project management.

 

2.  Evaluates contractors qualifications and bids; makes recommendations for contracting the engineering and construction of substation projects.

 

3.  Designs all standard relay, control and metering panels and switchboards.  Approves design changes.

 

4.  Establishes all MEAG system protection engineering standards and reviews all projects for standard compliance; approves all one line diagrams prior to transmittal to other entities.

 

5.  Responsible for the interface with the protection departments of other utilities.

 

6.  Prepares relay and fault data requested by customers.

 

7. Provides technical supervision of drafters and designers.

 

Qualifications: 

 

Generally requires a bachelor?s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university with at least 10 years of demonstrated related experience in the electric utility industry.  A combination of education and related experience may be substituted in lieu of a degree.
