Civil Engineer

Description: Civil Engineer This position can be located in either Birmingham, AL or Atlanta, GA.

Summary of Position Duties:

This position is responsible for providing civil / structural design engineering services for Southern Company Generation, including p reparation of civil / structural designs, calculations, and other documents, conducting site walk downs, and developing cost estimates and schedules for structural support of design modifications .

Education & Job Experience:

Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in Civil or Structural Engineering or BS in Engineering with advanced degree in Civil or Structural Engineering required. Advanced degree in related field a plus.

Three to fifteen years experience in civil / structural engineering related to the new construction and / or retrofit of power generation facilities or other similar heavy industrial facilities.

Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

This position requires:

Detailed knowledge of structural design principles, proficiency with structural codes, standards and industry methodologies.

Working knowledge of Fossil / Hydro plant systems, structures and components, including structural steel and concrete, deep and shallow foundations.

Working knowledge of ductwork and gas path structures, and proficiency with STAAD and / or GTStrudl structural design software a plus.

The successful candidate must also have demonstrated leadership characteristics necessary to lead a team of engineers in design of major retrofit projects.

License or Certification:

Licensed Engineer in at least one of the four states served by the Southern electric system preferred.

Other Requirements:

Position requires some non-extended travel to construction sites and client locations.
