LABORATORY MANAGER

Scenic & Historic Western Colorado

 

Reports to:  Chief Executive Officer

FLSA Status: Full-time, Exempt, Hourly


POSITION PURPOSE:

Live the dream of a simpler life in a scenic, historic small town.  Pioneers Medical Center is searching for a Medical Laboratory Supervisor for a small, rural facility in the breathtaking western paradise of Meeker, Colorado. 

The primary purpose of this position is to provide laboratory services to meet the needs of patients, performed in accordance with accepted standards and practices.  Directs, supervises, and coordinates functions and activities in any or all divisions of the laboratory.

 

B. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

Administrative Duties:

a.  Patient Care Services:

i.  Discussion of test procedures with Medical Staff

ii.  Test Technology and data generation

  iii.  Data evaluation, interpretation and communication

iv.  Quality Assurance

b.  Purchases of all inventory and ordering of new supplies, product research and specification, inventory control.

c.  Assumes personal responsibility for on-going continuing education and professional development.

d.  Supervises all testing in department and orientation of all laboratory employees.

e.  Evaluates laboratory equipment and assists and advises in their acquisition.

f.  Supports administration and physicians in problem solving within the laboratory.

g.  Interviews, evaluates and hires employees using established guidelines and PMC Policies and Procedures.

h.  Assists in budget preparation, completes expense reports as directed, and maintains related records and statistics.

i.  Attends and participates in meetings as required.

j.  Provides for necessary personnel coverage of section by preparing work assignments to ensure that work is done within a reasonable time frame.

 

Technologist Duties:

a.  Doing laboratory tests as ordered by members of the medical staff for both in and out patients.

b.  Receiving or obtaining specimens by proper technique for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease.

c.  Proper packaging, labeling, preservation and sending out of specimens for procedures not done in-house.

d.  Blood banking-type, cross-matching and obtaining blood.

e.  Quality control in all laboratory departments.

f.  Equipment maintenance and accuracy.

g.  Charges and records for filing and billing sent to business office and medical records.

h.  Notification to physician for any abnormal lab results.

i.  Performs other duties as assigned.

C. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor?s degree; Master?s degree preferred. Laboratory experience and training, and proven managerial skills required.  Must be registered as a medical technologist.

 

 

E.  WORK ENVIRONMENT

1.  Requires sitting, standing, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, and moving intermittently during work hours.

2.  Must work in multiple areas of the facility.

3.  Subject to frequent interruptions.

4.  Occasionally may be called at home, after regular working hours, to help solve problems and assist with administrative issues and/or emergencies.

5.  Will be required to be on-call on a rotating basis and able to work nights and weekends on an on-call basis. 

 

  Physical Requirements:

a. Must be able to read, write and speak the English language in an understandable manner.

b.  Must be able to function independently and make decisions.

c. Must be able to move intermittently throughout the day.  Must be able to reach into tight,

  cramped spaces, behind machines and into high and low spaces.

d.  Must have manual dexterity and physical mobility.
