LABORATORY SUPERVISOR, CLINICAL

This position is accountable for the direct supervision of the Mercy San Juan Laboratory to provide for the efficient and timely processing of specimens, and accurate and timely test results in a cost-efficient manner.

The incumbent works closely with the Laboratory Director to set policies and procedures for the processing and technical areas. This position requires knowledge of the organization and operation of a clinical laboratory. Basic knowledge of computer operations is also required.

This position is responsible for hiring, developing, motivating, counseling, and evaluating a competent, well-trained staff; holding staff accountable for maintaining high standards of performance; prioritizing assignments and making staffing adjustments in accordance with budgetary guidelines; monitoring the section operating and capital budgets; and maintaining the productivity goals of the section. This position also works closely with the Support Services Supervisor to oversee daily operations, trouble-shooting and problem-solving operational issues.

Effective communication with all members of the health care team is essential, including daily consultation with the laboratory medical director and pathologists for resolution of problems. This person develops and maintains policy and procedure manuals that meet regulatory standards and monitors performance of the quality of work performed by the processing and technical staff, and monitors quality control, ensuring that appropriate actions are taken to produce accurate results.

The incumbent prepares written reports and maintains quality control records; assists in the development and implementation of department goals and objectives; and keeps informed of current CAP, JCAHO, DHS, CLIA, OSHA, CMS billing requirements, and Title XXII standards and regulations for laboratories.
