POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

 

Job Title:

Laboratory Assistant Department

Lead ? Specimen Processing  Clinical Laboratory

 

  Supervisor:

  Technical Supervisor

 

Job Scope:

Coordinate all activities and responsibilities associated with the Specimen Processing area.

 

Principal Duties:

A.  Daily morning lab set-up routine

 

1.  Check and record thermometer temperatures for refrigerators, freezers, incubators, and room.

2.  Prepare wash buffer and clean buffer waste bottle as needed.

3.  Place bench table soaker and small biohazard holders/bags at each workplace.

4.  Empty large Biohazard containers.

5.  Put away racks, glassware from drying cart.

6.  Maintain -70? Freezers.

 

B. Patient Specimens/Proficiency Testing

 

1. Follow up on any problem samples, and enter any late samples from previous day prior to Federal Express daily delivery (usually 9 ?9:30 am).

2. Receive and open patient specimens upon arrival including proficiency samples.  Follow protocol for sample processing and handle Proficiency samples as directed in instructions. (CAP, New York, and Internal)

3. Inspect and number specimens and date receipt following established protocol. 

C. Safety/Procedures

1. Responsible for updating employee hepatitis records.

2. Responsible for updating Specimen Processing procedures.

3. Responsible for updating Safety Procedure

4. Assist in Safety and Monthly Meeting.

5. Assist new employees in orientations. D.  Client/Patient Contact ? Telephone 

1. Contact Customer (doctor, other labs, patients) when problems regarding specimens or request forms occur

2. Document all contacts on the patient request form and cross reference in computer.

E.  Assist Clinical Laboratory Scientists

1. Process urine samples for Lyme antigen

2. Store properly marked patient samples in appropriate freezer.

3. Keep procedure book updates copied for duplicate book.

 F.  Inventory and Supply Orders

1. Order reagents and other lab supplies as directed by Lab Scientists, keeping track of back orders.

2. Keep inventory of various reagents as directed.

3. Get quotes and search best prices for various supplies.

 

G. Data Entry

  1.  Enter patient demographics into computer.

 H. Miscellaneous

 

1. Assist with research projects such as pulling specimens when requested.

2. Assist Technical Supervisor or Laboratory Director in special projects.

3. Light typing/computer

4. Assist in lab cleanup, responsible for glassware washing and general good housekeeping.

5. Follow all safety precautions as outlined.

6. Act as an ambassador for the laboratory.

7. Look for time saving and economical ways to improve the job and the laboratory as a whole.

8. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements:  California Board Certified CPT

 

Education:   High School Diploma or AA in related field such as biology.

 

Experience:  Previous experience in laboratory setting or clinical laboratory. Supervisory a plus.

 

Responsibility for Personnel:   Total Staff Supervised: 3

 

Internal Contacts:  Clinical Laboratory Scientists, R & D Scientists, Office and Administrative Personnel.

 

External Contacts: Customers, patients, delivery personnel, sales personnel and suppliers.
