A businessman and his lawyer have been convicted of a fraud that plundered nearly half the £5m cash in a pension fund set up for the 200 workers of the now defunct forklift company Balfron Group, based in East Kilbride, Scotland.

The Danish entrepreneur Bjorn Stiedl fed the pilfered cash through overseas bank accounts to conceal its origin. London's Southwark crown court was told that he used the money to fund a life of luxury as well as paying off a £400,000 mortgage. His lawyer, Carsten Iversen, received a £100,000 "thank you". By the time Stiedl was caught, Balfron's workers were left with a £2.14m hole in the fund. With interest, losses have soared to£4m.

The 44-year-old businessman was convicted last November but this could not be reported until after the trial of his lawyer, who was unanimously convicted yesterday of taking part in the conspiracy. The pair will be sentenced later.

Stiedl's company, Crisun, bought Balfron's pension fund for £450,000 in 1994.
