Nationwide predicts year of stagnant house prices

Nationwide Building Society predicted that house prices could fall in the first part of next year as it reported a 14% rise in pre-tax profits to £255m for the six months to the end of September.

Philip Williamson, chief executive, said house prices could fall in the first part of 2006 and for the entire year the building society was predicting zero growth. For 2005 it predicted zero to 2% growth. Mr Williamson admitted that Nationwide, the fourth-largest mortgage lender, had been taking a cautious stance towards home loans. Mr Williamson said the society was still committed to mutual ownership.
