Redundant but still entitled to a fair deal

I have been offered a redundancy payment on my short-term contract. I used to be an employee of the business, but some of us agreed to go on short-term contracts. I was originally told that my redundancy and pension top-up would be made up to the end of the contract in June - but then received a letter stating that these payments would be enhanced to cover another three months of service.

A further letter said that a mistake had been made and that we would just get the original amounts.

Can I hold them to the enhanced terms?

There are two ways you could try to hold them to the enhanced terms.

First, you would need to show that the enhancement was part of a contract. To prove this, you would have to demonstrate that you had given something in exchange - agreeing to work for a longer period, for instance.

If you cannot do this, you could try the more difficult second route. On this road -'estoppel' - you would need to show that you had relied on the enhanced offer and would suffer detriment if you did not get it. For instance, you might have agreed to take out a larger mortgage. But this is complicated and difficult to prove. It may well be that you simply have to accept the original offer.
