Should I go for a mortgage linked to a Libor?

Q I am looking to raise an interest-only mortgage for ?80,000 over eight years. Charcol are promoting a product linked to the US London Interbank Offered Rate (Libor) which appears to be significantly cheaper than other products. Does this seem a good bet to you?

RT

A It is cheaper because currently US interest rates are lower than those in the UK, and Europe. However during the next eight years there could be dramatic changes, possibly with US interest rates moving to a premium. As with any mortgage linked to a Libor rate there is a higher element of risk because they are subject to all kinds of external pressures over which the bank or building society has no control. In other words it is a bit of gamble, although you will do better in the short term at least.
