Environmental Specialist

Job Requirements:
The candidate must have a Bachelor Degree in Engineering, Physical or Natural Science, or similar, preferably with environmental emphasis Four years experience in environmental regulatory work. Thorough knowledge of laws and regulations related to hazardous wastes/ materials, discharge of water and site investigation/remediation. Demonstrated oral and written communication skills to provide guidance to internal clients, to respond to agency requests, and to represent the Company at public meetings with agencies. Strong interpersonal skills are required, including the ability to interact with other departments and all levels of the work force, environmental groups and public agencies. Demonstrated ability to analyze data, interpret results and develop procedures consistent with regulatory requirements. Ability to maintain reference information and data bases using Microsoft Word, Excel, Visio and PowerPoint. Must work effectively in a team environment, under changing conditions, with occasional high-pressure situations and deadlines and the ability to analyze laws and regulations to determine their applicability to Company operations. Strong planning, organizing, prioritizing, and coordination skills to ensure timely completion of projects and self-motivated with the ability to function effectively with minimal supervision.

 

Preferences:
Thorough knowledge of California water quality and hazardous waste laws and regulations. Experience working with California environmental agencies on water quality permits and hazardous waste programs.

 

Typical Responsibilities:
Represent the Company through interaction with environmental regulatory agencies related to; NPDES permits, waste discharge requirements, management of hazardous waste/materials, and site remediation activities. Manage contractors/ consultants to perform assessment and cleanup of soil and groundwater contamination. Prepare environmental guidance documents and procedures related to the management of hazardous waste/material. Participate on the chemical spill notification/response team (includes some after-hours on call). Review proposed legislation and regulations and provide consultation to business units on new environmental requirements. Lead internal teams which cross organizational boundaries to address emerging company issues in the areas of water, hazardous waste/materials and site remediation. Provide consultative services to business units in response to inquiries which will require thorough technical and regulatory knowledge. Provide interpretative compliance guidance of how regulations apply to specific company operations and projects. Assist business units with training, audit preparation and responding to agency notices.
