The University of Southern California College of Letters, Arts and Sciences Department of Biological Sciences is seeking an Instructional Lab Technician II for the General Biology course.  The course offers 40 weekly laboratory sections of 20 students each.  Students perform laboratory exercises on key topics related to advances in our knowledge of the diversity of life and evolution; origin of life; eukaryotes/prokaryotes; ecology, cellular biology and physiology; cell composition/metabolism; gene action; organism structure and function.

 

The main objective of the Instructional Lab Technician position is to set up the laboratories for instruction and pre-run each experiment before instruction. 

 

Key responsibilities include:
Pre-run experiments before instruction.
Order all supplies, materials and equipments 
Prepare equipment and materials for lab instruction.
Maintain and prepares chemical solutions, cultures, media and reagents for use in laboratory experiments.
Maintain instructional labs and equipment in orderly, operable condition.
Care of animals and plants.
Brief instructional personnel and students on equipment use and answers technical and procedural questions.
Oversee 3 to 4 work-study students
Aid in handling administrative matters for the course such as exam grading, proctoring exams and class grade preparation.
Help with updating and revising the laboratory manual.

Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Excellent verbal communication skills
Proven ability to lead and provide work direction required.
Must be highly motivated and enthusiastic team player, with excellent problem solving skills.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Associate's Degree with one year specialized /technical/training. Knowledge of laboratory procedures and equipment specific to area of instruction.  Combined experience/education may substitute for minimum education.
