Marine Ecologist - GIS Specialist

MARINE/FRESHWATER ECOLOGIST

Marine Ecologists with strong GIS knowledge is sought to support our contract with the NOAA/NOS/NCCOS agency.  Activities will support the identification and implementation of activities to restore and protect marine habitats in U.S. estuarine, coastal and marine habitats.  The work is done in both office and field environments.  Required areas of expertise and knowledge:

 

Ecology

1. Species/habitat interactions, particularly Pacific species.

2. Fisheries concepts (especially methods of population estimation, survey effort correction, etc.).

3. Landscape ecology concepts (scale of interactions, connectivity, etc.).

 

GIS

1. ARCView including 3D-Analyst, Spatial Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, and user contributed Visual BASIC extensions. Need not be proficient in Visual BASIC.

2. ARCView including extensions and user contributed Avenue scripts.

3. Understand projections and be able to use the projection tools in ARC Toolbox.

 

PLEASE DO NOT APPLY IF YOU ONLY HAVE GIS EXPERIENCE.  MARINE ECOLOGY EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.

 

Candidate will work with a team of other marine scientists, GIS specialists, and statisticians with strong analytical capabilities. Candidate must be a team player who can work with minimal oversight.  Candidate will be required to prepare reports or parts of reports that integrate GIS and spatial statistics with aquatic ecology.
