REGISTERED VETERINARY ASSISTANT

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE $3,583 TO $4,439 (depending on experience)

Assists the Veterinarian in an Animal Control Agency setting by performing routine and sub-professional duties in the medical or surgical treatment of animals; assists with animal spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, treatments and other duties as required.  Assists the public in an appropriate manner and works collaboratively with other agency divisions to meet the goals of the agency.

 



REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

? Observes animals in the shelter for signs of illness or injury and reports these to the Veterinarian.

? Prepares animals for treatment or surgery and assists the Veterinarian during treatment or surgery.

? Intake of animals from the public for spay/neuter appointments.

? Releasing animals adopted or claimed by their owner and explaining any medical issues concerning the animal in a tactful/compassionate manner. 

? Assists Veterinarian and other technicians with treatments, surgeries and other department specific duties as needed and/or allowed by industry regulations.

? May assist Veterinarian on field rescue calls as necessary.

? Maintains inventory of medications and supplies and alerts the technician responsible for purchasing when items are needed.

? Insures that animals are properly cared for while under the care of the Veterinary Division.

? Cleans and disinfects cages, bowls and all exterior surfaces within the division.

? May assist the public over the telephone as needed.



 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/EXAMINATIONS

? Two years of full time paid experience in the care of animals, at least one year of which was in assisting a licensed veterinarian in the medical examination and treatment of animals.

? A Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) certificate or an Animal Health Technician (AHT) certificated issued by the California Board of Examiners in Veterinary Medicine is required.

? No felony convictions.

? Ability to pass a specified written test with a minimum score of 70%.

? Must pass a pre-employment physical examination and background investigation.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

? Knowledge of general veterinary clinic practices and procedures.

? Symptoms of common diseases of dogs, cats and other common domestic pets.

? Proper methods of safely handling and restraining a wide variety of animals, including large animals.

? Animal breeds and behaviors

? Animal nutritional needs.

? Ability to deal tactfully with the public, with City Officials and with fellow employees.

 

PHYSICAL CLASSIFICATIONS/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 ? Communicate effectively with citizens, staff and city contacts in person and by telephone.

? Compose, prepare and read typewritten or handwritten documents.

? Extensive stooping, bending and carrying.

? Ability to lift 75 pounds as demonstrated by a challenge test.

? Extensive direct handling, carrying and restraining of animals, both large and small.

? Endurance sufficient for standing and walking during entire duty shift.
